January 28

Today we discussed how to create a piece of writing so that you can visualize a season and the weather clearly.  We brainstormed ideas and then created a rough piece of writing which we edited together.  Here are the examples we created.

My Autumn Walk by Division 4

Brittle leaves crunched beneath my feet as I walked to school on a beautiful autumn day.  The sweet smell of freshly baked pumpkin pie filled my nostrils as it wafted out of a neighbour’s window.  As I walked further the smell of pine from the trees filled the autumn air.    The wind blew the leaves as if they were going to fall.  Birdsong greeted my ears as I passed the wooded area. I smirked as I caught an acorn as it fell from a nearby tree.  The brilliant colours of fall were worn as robes by the stately trees around me.  Fall is a wonderful time of year.

The Silent Thief by Ms. Kooner

Slowly, the fog crept in on silent feet.  It began to envelop the city so slowly, the residents hardly noticed until at last its capture was complete.  The mist swirled in the wind and only ghostly objects could be seen.  The familiar became the unfamiliar as outlines of buildings emerged.  Was that the post office or a haunted mansion?  Only on closer inspection would you find out.  Beads of dew appeared on leaves and on the grass.  Your breath, which earlier could be seen in the cold air, now began to blend seamlessly into the fog.  The landscape, usually filled with colour and noise, seem to become deafeningly silent and grey.  How easily the clouds could steal away our joy.  The sun, which easily warms the earth, today sent weak rays to pierce the fog.  Unfortunately it was a battle lost to the fog.

The planning sheet and the rough copy of your writing is due tomorrow. The learning intention is: I can write a descriptive paragraph using "juicy" words that helps a reader visualize a season or a type of weather.

During Science, we learned a lot about how to make our car drive smoothly and in a straight line.

January 22

During writing today, we discussed how authors help us visualize.  We created a character and used words and phrases to help the reader visualize the character.  Here is the character we created.

My brother-in-law, Nigel, is a very grouchy man. He smells like fish and he takes a shower once in a blue moon. I could count on one hand the number of times he has changed his clothes.  I’m glad I hardly ever see him because not only do I have to put with the smell that emanates from him but allow him to sit upon my furniture with his filthy clothing.  Whenever we meet, he always is full of himself.  He never agrees with what I say. For example, my advice for buying new clothes goes out the window.  He wears an old worn out fisherman’s hat on which a huge seagull is always perched.  It’s obvious that he likes to be alone. Nigel hates the laughter of children that come from the children who play on the beach.  On the other hand, he is very kind to animals (except fish, he is a fisherman after all). His Australian accent is very raspy as if he has something down his throat.  It might be the few words that he speaks that he is choking on.  The only time a crooked grin is on his face is when he’s standing alone on his boat looking out to sea. The boat is the only home he’s ever known.  I think you know now what I have to put up with.

The planning page for this writing assignment is due tomorrow.  The criteria for this assignment is as follows:
