September 27

Today, we talked about Writer's Workshop and looked at the BC Performance Standards.  Everyone has brought home their writing with the Performance Standards sheet.  It needs to be signed and returned.

In math, the grade 6's have page 10 and 11 in the workbook.  The grade 7's have page 69 #1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10.

After a timed sort, during Word Study, we did a Word Hunt using our silent reading books.  Remember to find words that begin with  "sc", "sn", and "sw" if you didn't finish in class.

During reading time we discussed what to put into our reading response blogs.  If your reading response blog is not finished, it needs to be published at home.  Remember to include the title of the book, the genre, the author, a connection to the book, a question and any feelings you had while reading it.

We also found that many people had responded to our blogs.  It is now up to us to reply to their comments.  Please check your blogs and remember to use proper etiquette when responding to comments given to you.

As usual, remember to read 30 minutes every night.

September 25

Our day started today with learning about genre during reading time.  Everyone categorized different books into genres and debated about about the categories.

We also discussed our Forty Book Challenge for the year.
During Math, the grade 6's finished their workbook corrections and if they were not completed, they are for homework.

We also met our grade one buddy class, Ms. Lirenman's class, today.

In the afternoon, we participated in a Mystery Skype call with a school in New Zealand.  It was interesting that it was 2:00 pm on a Wednesday for us and it was 9:00 am on Thursday for them.  They also wore uniforms at a public school.  They guessed our location first.  Some of our guesses included England and Australia because of their accents.

REMINDERS:  We need more parent drivers for our field trip on October 4th.
Bring Scholastic order if you are ordering anything.
Remember to read 30 minutes.

September 18

Today was jam packed full of learning.  We talked about different genres during reading and shared some favourite books.  We worked on patterning in t-tables in Grade 6 math and the Grade 6's have page 6 and 7 for homework in their workbook if they didn't finish it at school.  Grade 7's have homework in the textbook (the Connect) and in their workbook.

We visited the library and everyone had a chance to sign out a book and we learned about how to shelve books correctly.  You can practice shelving books here.

For French, students also need to finish their "backpack" assignment.

In the afternoon we learned about early humans for S.S.  Some students may still need to finish their information sheet.

We also watched a video based on Steven's Claunch's talk Tedx talk titled "There is No Shame in Having a Disabiity."  We then posted our reactions onto Edmodo and responded to our partner class in Montreal who had watched the same video.  We are doing this to prepare for reading "Our of My Mind," by Sharon Draper.

Anybody who didn't finish their posts on Edmodo and comment on one other person's post, needs to do so at home.

Please remember to bring money for the Terry Fox Run.

September 17

Thank you to those of you brought in money for the Terry Fox Run.  Tomorrow we are collecting quarters and loonies.  Remember, if we reach our school goal of $1100, there are some teachers who will allow a student from their class to spray their hair with washable hair paint.

Today we talked about how to properly comment on a blog, during our writing time.  We learned about how to continue a conversation and the importance of using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Here is the video we watched to learn about commenting.

We also created our individual blogs which you can view from Blog tab at the top of this post.  We also joined Edmodo in order to connect with other students who will be reading the same books as we are.

For homework:  Grade 6 Math: page 22, #2 abc
                           Grade 7 Math: page 58 #3-6, 8, 9 and for a challenge you can try 10 or 11

                           Please read for 30 minutes.

Return all notices that require signatures please.

Today was a very busy day.  We had our morning assembly and math in the morning. (Grade 7's have homework in their textbook and workbook).  Then we played a geography guessing game to prepare us for our first Mystery Skype.  We talked to Mrs. Finkleberg's grade 6 class in Montreal, Quebec.  They will be one of our buddy classes for the Global Read Aloud.  Then, we had Gym and Band.  In between, we met our little buddy class, Ms. Lirenman's class, to take a photo for International Dot Day.  Here is some of the art we made for Dot Day.

Supplies

Many students have already brought supplies to school. If you haven't already done so, could you please bring the supplies listed on the school website currently.  Grade 7's will only need 1 binder. All students will be expected to use a planner daily and they are $6 each.  Throughout the year, supplies may need to be replenished as they get used up.
